The Cleveland Plain Dealer recently highlighted in a two-page spread St. Vincent Charity’s orthopedic surgeon Dr. Bernard Stulberg and his use of breakthrough technology, the TSolution One, for hip replacement surgery. The story captures St. Vincent Charity’s commitment to innovation and providing advanced surgical options for our patients.
In her story, reporter Julie Washington followed the hip replacement surgery of patient Thomas Shano, who for the past two years had been finding ordinary activities, such as putting on his shoes and walking short distances, an uncomfortable challenge. Dr. Stulberg diagnosed Shano with avascular necrosis, which occurs when there is inadequate blood flow to the ball portion of the hip joint. The condition caused Shano to feel like he was “walking on sponges.”
Not only did Dr. Stulberg recommend an immediate hip replacement, he also felt Shano would benefit from the use of the TSolution One throughout his surgery. With the TSolution One, Dr. Stulberg was able to create an exact 3-D computer model of Shano’s hip based on CT scans and develop a comprehensive pre-surgical plan.

With the patient’s permission, the reporter was able to see first-hand how Dr. Stulberg transferred the pre-operative plan to the robotic system, and then guide the robot to machine the bone cavity and joint surface to sub-millimeter accuracy. This more accurate placement means less post-surgical pain and diminished early post-operative complications such as bone fracture and implant dislocation.
Just hours after Shano’s two-hour surgery, he was able to take his first few steps. By that night, he was able to walk the length of the hospital hallway three times and went home the following day.
