St. Vincent Surgeon Awarded Young Physician of the Year

St. Vincent Charity Medical Center foot and ankle surgeon Dr. Michael Canales was recently recognized for his contributions to the development of podiatric medicine with the Young Physician Professional Achievement Award by Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine.

A 2004 graduate of the school, Dr. Canales completed his residency at St. Vincent Charity and is now part of the highly specialized St. Vincent Charity Spine and Orthopedic Institute.  Dr. Canales specializes in advanced podiatric medicine and surgery, providing complete medical and surgical care for injuries and conditions of the foot and ankle. His special interests include reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle, trauma of the foot and ankle and sports medicine of the foot and ankle.

In receiving this honor at the college’s 2017 Student and Alumni Weekend, Dr. Canales dedicated the award to his mentor, Dr. Gerard Yu, who served as St. Vincent’s director of podiatric surgical residency training program and chief of podiatric surgery until his death in 2005.

“Dr. Yu was a true pioneer dedicated to improving resident training to firmly establish and expand the podiatric profession,” Dr. Canales said.  “His work not only set the stage for me to succeed, but helped establish St. Vincent Charity at the clear leader in podiatric medicine.  It is an honor to receive this award for my work and to honor Dr. Yu for blazing the trail for us.”

To schedule an appointment with Dr. Canales, call 877-861-3550 or visit this page on the St. Vincent Charity Medical Center website.
