Janice G. Murphy to Lead St. Vincent Charity Medical Center

CLEVELAND – AUGUST 7, 2019 – The Sisters of Charity Health System today announced Janice G. Murphy, RN, BSN, MSN, FACHE, as president & CEO of St. Vincent Charity Medical Center (SVCMC), effective immediately. Murphy succeeds Dr. David Perse, who stepped down from that role August 6. Moving forward, Dr. Perse will continue as an employed physician of St. Vincent Medical Group.

“We are grateful to welcome Jan to St. Vincent, a ministry whose foundering sisters served as Cleveland’s first public health nurses more than 150 years ago,” said Thomas J. Strauss, president & CEO of the Sister of Charity Health System, which is the corporate parent of SVCMC and 12 other Catholic health ministries in Ohio and South Carolina. “Jan’s career – from roots in Catholic ministry to extensive nursing expertise to executive leadership at the Cleveland Clinic – uniquely suits this important time of change at St. Vincent as we chart a new course for a bright future.”

Cleveland’s first and only downtown hospital, SVCMC is the city’s faith-based, high-quality health care provider. Its distinguished doctors and caregivers are devoted to treating every patient with clinical excellence and compassionate care. Home to the renowned Spine and Orthopedic Institute and the Center for Bariatric Surgery, SVCMC has services in cardiovascular, emergency medicine, primary care, occupational health, behavioral health and addiction medicine.

“This is a time of tremendous opportunity for St. Vincent,” said Murphy. “We have transformational opportunities to better deliver the person-centered care that is the future of Catholic health care, which includes efforts out into the community to address the social determinants of health. Together, we will continue the charism of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine.”

Since November 2018, Murphy has served as senior vice president of mission and ministry at the Sisters of Charity Health System. Prior to SCHS, she served as chief operating officer (COO) of regional hospitals and family health centers for the Cleveland Clinic. In that role since 2015, she was responsible for the operations of 10 community hospitals, 21 family health centers, three freestanding emergency departments, and three health and wellness centers. Prior, she served as COO of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi, president of Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital, president of Cleveland Clinic Fairview and Lakewood Hospitals, senior vice president and COO of Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital, and chief nursing officer of Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital.

Murphy is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. She holds a master’s degree in nursing and administration from the University of Akron, bachelor’s degree in nursing from Bowling Green State University, registered nursing degree from the Fairview Hospital School of Nursing, and LPN from Marymount School of Practical Nursing. Throughout her career, she has been recognized by many for excellence in leadership development, facility management, clinical quality and compassion.

“We are proud that Jan, who also had the opportunity to be educated by the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine in her early years, is bringing her many gifts to St. Vincent,” said Sister Judith Ann Karam, CSA, chair of the public juridic person of the Sisters of Charity Health System and congregational leader of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine – the health system’s founding congregation. “We know in her hands that St. Vincent will continue to provide care for all of God’s people, including the most vulnerable.”
